Educational Program

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

The key focus of EYE is a traveling interactive classroom experience.

~Program Highlights~

Interactive website
Follow the crew’s experiences, adventures, and travels through an interactive website.

Documentary series
A 50 minute presentation of the crew’s latest port visits; produced and delivered monthly.

Video-conferencing
Talk with the crew firsthand as they’re halfway around the globe.

Crew visits
An in-school presentation and meeting with the crew members before, during, and after the voyage.

Teacher Control
Create assignments online. Moderate online discussion. Augment current SOL curriculum requirements.

~Interactive Classroom Projects~

A composition of individual projects, the Educational Program follows a distance learning model. The ongoing interaction with classrooms allows each lesson to be fine-tuned to specific interests or needs.

Connection to the World
Live-feed video-conferencing will be used to create a live dialogue between students and international classrooms, community leaders, interesting individuals, and families. Teachers will coordinate with EYE to tailor the conference to their needs.

Help Chart Our Voyage/ Plan Our Adventure!
When a certain classroom is scheduled to video-connect with the crew, in the week prior, they will do an in-class exercise where students help plot our course. The classroom then sends back the course to the crew and the crew uses it! Classrooms can also research our destination and recommend places/ people we will visit.

A Basket of Goods
In each location, the crew will find the cost of a predetermined basket of goods in local currency. The classroom then uses currency exchange rates to find and compare the cost of the goods abroad and at home.

The Science of Sailing
Classrooms will be in communication with our crew and will have the opportunity to help solve on board engineering problems at home while learning about the science behind sailing a boat around the world.

Made in? Follow a Container
Students will interact by finding items at home that are made in the countries the crew visits. At every major shipping port EYE visits, the crew will find a batch of goods heading for the US. This corresponds to at-home field-trips that can be taken to one of the many Hampton Roads container terminals.

The Scientific Method
EYE will conduct basic experiments that utilize the Scientific Method and highlight topics such as the Water Cycle, Pollution, and other areas of interest. Teachers can suggest topics that will best fit their classroom needs.

Follow the Adventure
This project is an interactive website which allows teachers to use GIS and global mapping technology to follow the path of the crew. The site will feature weekly journal and photo updates will be based upon ‘culturegrams’ currently used in classrooms.

Name that Creature
As part of the Spotlight on Global Ecology, one interesting plant/animal will be left unidentified, but has a photo and a listing of important characteristics. It then becomes a class project to identify the species.
